One of the things I do before visiting any new country is searching for the essential apps that the locals use and download them. I’m not talking about Booking, Skyscanner and Trip advisor; these are already on my phone and probably yours too. I mean apps that are used to order food, taxis or book events etc… If you are travelling to Egypt soon, check out this list; I’m sure you can find a few useful apps that will definitely make your trip to Egypt more convenient.
The Delivery Apps
We love our delivery in Egypt, there’s a delivery service in almost every kind of shop. From getting a bottle of milk at 2 AM to getting your laundry done. Most shops will have a phone number for delivery orders. Now, If you’re visiting as a tourist or you’re a new expat and you can’t speak Arabic, delivery apps with English UI will save you. here’s a list of the apps I use all the time.
1. Talabat (previously Otlob)
Food, Groceries and Pharmacy delivery
Because It has hundreds of restaurants of almost all categories, Talabat is the most popular app for food ordering in Egypt. You can order what you want, pay online or in cash, and track your order from start to finish. In addition, they have great deals if it’s your first time using the app or paying using your master card. Besides, even if you don’t plan to order food while travelling to Egypt, it’s still a good idea to download it to get an idea of the average meal price here.
Groceries, Pharmacy, Fruits and Vegetables, Butchery, Pet shops and much more!
InstaShop is my go-to for grocery shopping. It does your shopping for you from the large reputable supermarket chains in Egypt and lets you pay online, in cash or ask the delivery man to bring a card reader for you. Again, if you think you won’t need it, use it to know the standard prices for things you will definitely buy like a bottle of water or a chocolate bar.
3. Carrefour Egypt
The famous French hypermarket will deliver anything to your doorstep. The app almost always has great offers and discounts. Plus, they have a loyalty program. The only downside is that it doesn’t always deliver on the same day. I wouldn’t use it if I’m only in Egypt for a few days. However, it’s great if you’re vesting for long periods of time.
Pharmacy and Personal Care products Delivery
Hopefully, you won’t use this app for meds. However, If you find yourself in need of a flue or a stomach pill or if you found out you’re out of shaving razors, this app will save you. It delivers meds, personal care products, cosmetics, etc.. and it works 24/7.
Getting around the streets of Egypt can be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. My advice is to always use one of the transportations apps and save yourself the hustle. They’re dirt cheap. For example; An Uber trip from The Four Seasons Hotel – Nile Plaza to the Grand Egyptian Museum which is about 20Km or 13 Miles and takes from 20 to 30 minutes will cost you a little above $4!
Cars and bikes ordering
Another taxi ordering app (and recently acquired by Uber too), Careem is another alternative if you can’t find an Uber nearby. Careem also operates in many more cities than Uber including cities like Luxor, Aswan, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, Northern Coast, Marsa Matruh, Fayoum and more.
If you are on a lower budget, Buses can be of help. Swvl is a much better alternative to public transportation. The buses are clean and air-conditioned, the drivers are polite and they usually follow the schedule despite the crazy traffic in Cairo and Alexandria.
Reservations and Other Apps
Need a doctor appointment, or a cinema ticket or in the mood for a musical event? Try these apps
Restaurants and Events Reservations
Qube is a cool app for upscale restaurants reservations and discovering and booking events in Cairo. Give it a try if you’re not sure what you want to do for the weekend.
If you needed to see a doctor, hopefully, you won’t, you can set an appointment with a nearby specialist, book a home visit or even get a consultant on the phone using Vezeeta. You’ll see the doctors reviews and their rates to help you decide (They lately added pharmacy delivery to their services too)
10. Cairo 360
Entertainment guide in Cairo
Cairo 360 is my favorite app to use when in Cairo. It tells you what’s happening in the never-sleeping city and covers all your entertainment needs. concerts , plays , performances , shopping fairs, you name it and you’ll find it on Cairo 360
