Almost 2350 years ago Alexander the Great founded Alexandria to be later home to one of the 7 wonders of the world and also one of the seven wonders of the medieval world. Alexandria is also our home town. So, it gives us great pleasure to talk about it. We know it’s probably not on your Egypt itinerary. However, If you have a day or tow you can spare, or if you want a sweet escape from Cairo then we highly recommend you give us a visit. We wanted to share with you some of the unique things to do in Alexandria to give your trip to Egypt the Alexandrian feel.
1. spend a night in a 100-year-old opera house
Even if you’re not a fan of the opera, Alexandria Opera House offers all kinds of musicals and art shows. we attended concerts for bands from all over the world and from very different genres. You can enjoy a night of Oriental music, a ballet show or a Latin dancing band all for a very reasonable price. The building itself was built in 1918 and designed by the French architect Georges Parcq. The interior design is simply stunning. You’ll need to dress formally for this one; men will have to wear suits and ties which can be rented. The whole atmosphere inside is so elegant and classy. So, if you’re a music lover, don’t miss the Opera House in Alexandria.
2. Ride a boat or a yacht in the harbour
This is our favorite thing to do in Alexandria, Enjoying the city from the outside and watching the skyline from the harbour. You can ride all kinds of boats and yachts in the harbour. Small boat rides can last from 30 minutes to an hour. Also, You can rent a yacht for 6 hours to spend the whole morning which makes it perfect for parties. Ask your tour guide to arrange a ride for you. You won’t regret it plus you can take some beautiful Instagramable photos there!
3. Stroll by the Mediterranean
Alexandria has a 32 km (20 Miles) coastline. Strolling and running by the corniche is one of the beloved activities of the Alexandrians. It’s safe, clean and has an amazing view of the Mediterranean. You can stop by for a coffee or tea from one of the many cafés with a beautiful view. Also, You’ll find people selling tasty grilled corn which is very famous in Alexandria and other snacks and drinks. I’d say our favorite strip to take a walk is from El Shatby ( right in front of Bibliotheca Alexandrina to Stanly Bridge). Because It’s usually much less crowded than other parts of the corniche and has plenty of nice cafés too. Unlike most tourist attractions in Egypt, nobody will try to sell you something there or even talk to you. everyone just enjoys there walks.
4. Ride a Hantour (horse-drawn carriage)
If you’re tired of walking, then a Hantour by the corniche is another nice ride. You will find many of them next to the Citadel of Qaitbay and they can take you anywhere by the corniche. It’s one of the unique experiences of Alexandria that you might wanna try. Our tip is to agree on the price and distance first and don’t pay more than $10.
5. Go to the Mamoura Beach
Alexandria used to be the number one destination for summer vacations in Egypt till the nineties. Although that’s not the case anymore, with most beaches closed and the Northern Coast being so popular. Still, you can visit one of the most famous beaches in Alexandria Mamoura beach. You can spend the perfect day if you’re visiting in the summer. Mamoura is a gated community with beautiful streets, an amazing beach, some restaurants and even an amusement park which has some really great games. If you’re staying for a longer period of time, you can even rent a chalet by the beach for an affordable price.
6. Have lunch at a rooftop restaurant
It’s all about the view here, and having lunch at a rooftop restaurant is one of the unmissable activities to do in Alexandria. Many hotels will have rooftops restaurants and bars with a view of the whole corniche. Our tip is to go around sunset so that you can enjoy the view in daylight, watch the sunset and then enjoy it at night!
